How To Control Bats In Your Home

Written By irvan hidayat on Selasa, 04 Juni 2013 | 03.35

It is 31 degrees outside right now. I have just returned from a very distraught situation. Someone in Grand Blanc, Michigan found a bat flying in their living room, and called me to come get it out.

It hardly ever fails when I arrive at a home with a bat inside; the homeowner greats me and gets right to business. They need that bat out of there! The first thing they show me is where they first found the bat. For some reason, this etches a place in their heads. I then ask them to show me the last place they found the bat. I could then begin my investigation.

When the bat is located and removed there is still some unfinished business to take good care of. I put on my detective hat and ascertain how the bat got in. Most homeowners have figured this out for themselves - either it flew down the chimney or came in through the dryer vent. As sure of themselves that they are, I think otherwise. It takes me significant time to educate them and get them to recognize that bats just aren't constructed for flying in 30 degree weather. The bat came from somewhere inside their home!

For every bat I find in someone's living quarters, I figure there at least ten in their walls or attic. This isn't always the case. Sometimes there are many more!

Due to inefficiencies in the way our houses are constructed, they leak air. All houses exchange air throughout the day and it is a regular and needed process. Some older homes exchange air as much as once per hour! Now imagine a bat being in a rather cold and stale environment and sensing a rather warm and fresh air flow nearby. Mother nature kicks in; clean air means bugs, bugs mean food. The wayward and confused bat follows the fresh air current and squeezes itself through the wall passages until it's competent to enter the living quarters.

So that you can sleep peacefully (without worrying that a bat might join you in bed,) I advocate a complete inspection subsequent to the bat is removed. This inspection will identify the gaps and openings in your house that help to confuse bats and lead them directly to your bedroom, living room, or cellar. When Spring arrives and the bats start flying outside to catch bugs again, they can be evicted once and for all.
